Startup macro with Zbrush 2026.1

Hi,

My original post was a few years ago with a solution found, but as times have changed with regards Zbrush, I have stumbled upon a problem.

I have had for years, from version 2022 to 2024, used a custom macro startup grid when opening Zbrush. With each version upgrade I just copy and paste the text from my Zbrush startup default text and into the new one and have no issue with startup and grid loading.

I had to upgrade to 2026.1 and the script doesn’t work anymore. Please could someone advise me on what to do to make it work for the latest Zbrush version.

Thank you

Hi @ArtofGregg

See my post here.

NOTE: I am on ZBrush 2022.0.8 so I can’t be absolutely sure this will work for you. It’s probably worth a try.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunatly its the same thing happening.

I even tried recording the macro again, renaming, changing folder saves but still, the same popup appears.

I am at a loss here, its worked previously, never an issue.

I mean, its there, in the ui, I click it and the grid appears. It just wont load on startup.

Sorry that it’s not working for you. For technical issues, you might be better off contacting support. Under “Support Requests”, click on “Sign In To Create A Ticket”.

I opened a support ticket with maxon and they got back to me saying for zscripts, macros etc I should focus here, unless there is a problem with zbrush itself.

I really hope someone in the community has an idea as to how i can fix this.

@ArtofGregg

Have you considered, after loading the grid, using the ZStartup Utility plugin “Store Current Tool” option? If you don’t have the plugin, you can get it here. That will store the current Tool as a ZPR file to load when you start ZBrush.

Ive just spent a few hours trying to creat enew macros etc.

I also tried what you mentioned with the zStartup Utility but I still no win.

Im at a loss. Ive been using zbrush for 12 years.
I dont mind having to just click the macro button in my own personal work but when it comes to studio work I tend to work a million miles an hour and any convenience is welcome.

Thank you for the aid ZBER2

@ArtofGregg

After you enabled “Store Current Tool” in ZStartup Utility, you have to click “Install Custom Startup” an the bottom of the plugin. Did you do that? Any changes you make in the plugin, you have to click “Install Custom Startup”.

I did that yes, no win, I even compared the defaultscript from my working 2024 version to the zstartup utility (2026) one to see where it may be going wrong.

Its just the loading of the macro, it just wont do it on startup. Crazy.

I noticed in your posts above that you don’t have the “Grid Load Gregg” macro in the “ZStartup > Macros > Misc” folder. Have you tried putting it in that folder? I have been using ZBrush since version 3.1 and I have found that some Macros have to be in that folder because ZBrush won’t see them if they’re not. Other than that, I don’t know what to say. As I have mentioned, I am on version 2022.0.8 and wouldn’t be able to track down the problem even if I had the macro.

Good call, gave that a go but nope, still wont work.

I still have my 2022.0.8 version too, just as backup when all was well in the land of zbrush :wink:

Im fine sticking with 2024 for work. Everyone else at the studio has updated to the most recent. Fortunately I dont need to receive zbrush files from them as I am concept rather than asset creation.

Ah well, if an update doesnt fix my issue its not worth the headache.

Thanks again ZBER2.
