This project is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s drawing “Five Characters in a Comic Scene”, dated around 1493. This fascinating sketch features four grinning, taunting grotesques surrounding a dignified elderly man crowned with a wreath of oak leaves. While it’s not known to be a study for any particular painting, Leonardo created several other examples of grotesque heads, so this may have been one of his visual experiments.
